There is so much to do in Kruger, I don't even know where to start. This page is purely for what you can do within Kruger itself, if you want to see what you can get up to around Kruger then check out our surrounding areas page.
In my opinion, the best way to experience Kruger. Yes you don't get a guide but you get to travel at your own speed, spot animals for yourself (there is something so satisfying about being to one to spot a leopard) and stop with animals for as long as you like.
Combine self driving with the occassional private guided games drive and a few of the SAN Parks tours and you have the best of both worlds. You can go at your own pace, experience the park out of hours with the SAN Parks and then get lots of information from your private games drives.
For more information of self driving check out this page:
These tend to be done on big 20 seater trucks, so don't expect an intimate chat with your guide about all the amazing wildlife. This is the only way to go around the park after the gates close, so is a very special experience knowing that there are no public vehicles exploring (except for the occassional lost tourist).
You will usually leave in the dark so make sure to take some layers. It's a magical time as the sun starts to come up and no one else except SANs drives are in the park.
Approximately 3 hours
Price: from R580
Set off a couple of hours before the gates close and enjoy the beautiful African sunset before continuing the adventure into the night and using spotter lights to see the nocturnal animals.
Approximately 3 hours
Price: from R580
Depart after the sun has set for a whole new experience. The gates are shut and it just the SAN Parks vehicles in the park. Use spotter lights to try and see the animals as you get a glimpse into the dangers of the night in Kruger.
Approximately 2 hours
Price: from R450
Absolute must!!
There is nothing quite like walking out in the bush with wildlife potentially around every corner.
You walk with trained guides who are well trained to pick up on animal behaviour and also carry a riffle to scare animals away if needed.
Approximately 2-4 hours depending on type of walk
Price: from R450pp
An incredible opportunity for the adventurous. I haven't done any of these ...YET!
An incredible chance to be amoungst the bush for 3 nights, walking between camp sites!
There are 2 options on style of experience:
Backpacking trails: where you need your own camping equipment and food which you carry with you for 3 nights.
Price: from R4600pp
Wilderness Trails: camping equipment in provided in basic huts/tents in fenced rustic camps (these fences are only there to outline the boundary of the camp, they aren't expected to keep animals out). A chef cooks for you each day. Again this is 3 nights.
Price: from R13600pp
Ever thought about hiring a 4x4 and just driving through the bush ... just me!
Well you can, SAN Parks offers 4x4 routes that you can simply take as part of a self drive day or go fully off the grid and do a multiday 4x4 trail.
These trails mean camping overnight in the middle of the bush and seeing no one but your group for the whole time. You need your own 4x4 which can be easily hired with all camping equipment.
They come with a guide in another vehicle who will lead you on 4x4 tracks through the African wilderness to overnight camp sites.
These range from 1 night to 4 night trips that lead you 500km from the very south of Kruger to the northern tip.
Prices: from R9100pp
If you want to book any of these activities and are unsure how to do so, then please just get in touch, either by email or reach out over social media.
Lots of ompanies offer private game drives in Kruger. These depart from outside the park and can only enter during normal gate opening times and then they have to depart prior to gates closing. These guides are usually amazing and it can be well worth it but this is very guide dependant. There are a certain number of companies that are allowed into Kruger after gate closing times but these are usually confined to the private accommodations that are in Kruger itself.
There is also a SAN Parks option that not many people know about... you can actually hire a guide to come with you in your car. This gives you the freedom of self drive but with the knowledge and local insight of a guide at the fraction of the cost.
There is so much to see and do in outside Kruger too. From hiking to boat safaris to paragliding and animal sanctuaries. Check out the surrounding area, as no matter how magical Kruger is, it really is a shame to miss what is on Kruger doorstep.
Prices are correct at time of writing and are valid until Oct 2026, I will try and keep these updated as much as possible but do check when booking either on the SANs Parks website or when you get to Kruger itself. If the prices are out of date please get in touch.
